Edam–Volendam celebrate 650th anniversary in 2007

Edam and Volendam are a community where beauty and enjoyment are perfectly blended.
In 1357 the former village of Edam received its municipal charter from Count William V. Later, on Edam’s territory, Volendam arose. In 1979 the two towns merged to form the new town of Edam–Volendam. This “marriage” blended beauty and enjoyment.

In 2007 our community will be celebrating its 650th anniversary in a spectacular fashion. In Edam the focus will be on historical activities as well as on fine exhibitions and musical events which the local people will organise. From June 19 to July 1 the celebrations will reach their climax in the special Edam week, with a grand spectacle focussing on history, folklore, music, dance and theatre. The town will be turned into a place of mystery and imagination.
In Volendam you are welcome to visit large scale events involving music, sports and the shipping trade. The town will present its historic and present-day culture.
